Is Pixel Art Making a Comeback in Video Games?

Minecraft-mania has proven one thing: graphics are insignificant when the game-play experience is top-notch. How can this be? Minecraft offers players unlimited options with an entire open world at their disposal, limited only by each player’s building creativity. That’s what makes Minecraft a smash hit, not stellar graphics.

Over the years, pixel-art games have made a comeback on gaming platforms. People love pixel art because of its old-school charm and character designs. Here are a couple of new games that are the absolute embodiment of the pixel art trend.
Is Pixel Art Making a Comback?
Dustforce
The heroes of Dustforce
Dustforce is an Indie platform video game created by the Hitbox team. It plays on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Vita, PC and Mac. To play, you select one of four janitors and advance through the levels by cleaning messes and beating dust-like foes. Dustforce looks deceptively simple —unless you are really thorough and clean everything, you can kiss goodbye any opportunity to finish a mission with the “S” rank. What’s more, each of the janitors has specific stats that are unavailable to you as a player, so you need to spend some time figuring out the best approach to tackle particular levels.

ShovelKnight
Shovel your way to Glory!
Shovel Knight was created by an independent team of developers called Yacht Club Games. Shovel Knight resembles games from early ‘90s and plays on a variety of platforms, including Xbox One, PlayStation 3, 4 and Vita, Nintendo 3DS Wii U, Microsoft Windows, OS X, and Linux.

As the title implies, you take the role of a knight carrying a shovel. As you play, you jump over your foes to kill them, and destroy the terrain with your shovel, while having an amazing time doing it! It sounds easy enough, but trust me, the game is a force to be reckoned with! If you like Shovel Knight, be sure to check out Rogue Legacy, too!

Terraria
Questing through a pixelated fantasy land
Terraria won’t have much trouble winning you over if you’re also a fan of Minecraft. Terraria is an open-ended 2D sandbox video game, in which you gather materials and explore the terrain. You can choose a single-player campaign or multi-player with friends.

If you haven’t played Terraria yet, definitely check it out. You complete quests, defeat various bosses, level up, and attract NPC to occupy the rooms you’ve built. Developed by Re-Logic, the game is extremely popular and available on all the usual platforms.

New and Old Pixel-Art Game Sites

With the return of the Pixel-art gaming, many people are starting to develop their own game projects. Sites like Kickstarter are ideal for indie game developers trying to get crowd funding.  Players appreciate and respect creativity, challenges, and out-of-the-box thinking, and are willing to support up-and-coming developers. (Major hits like Plants vs. Zombies, Super Meat Boy, and Angry Birds are a few of my favorites games growing up.)

Looking for a place to play retro games? Google recently added a feature where you can play old school arcade games like Pacman and Snake.  Just type elgoog in your search bar and let it take you to the Google Mirror.
